This cellist was providing sonorous sounds with his bow on the cello strings as I walked out of the University Bookstore on University Avenue yesterday. While I already had several CDP theme day images in mind, including one I'd taken at the Nordic Heritage Museum the day before, I decided this was the "wood" image I had to post. I'm sorry you can't hear this chap play as he was really quite proficient and it was a treat for me, a former cellist, to pause, watch and enjoy his music.
If you are familiar with the City Daily Photo blog community, then you'll remember that the first of each new month is our community theme day. "Wood" is today's theme, and to see what kind of wood is being knocked upon around the rest of the world, click here to view thumbnails for all participants .

It's a great photograph made even better by knowing that he was a good player. Lately I've been listening to the soundtrack CD from Jackie and Hilary, another reason to love cello music.
Great choice Chuck. The day we saw you I believe there was a young fellow playing a cello across the street. The sound is so relaxing.
My favourite instrument! What a beautiful choice, tells a story, gorgeous patina on the wood. Love it.
Excellent choice, Chuck!
«Louis» would have liked to have heard this; the cello being one of his favorite instruments.
Oh no I forgot all about theme day. Wood it is. Yikes. Did you post a comment before I finished posting my pics? Maybe? Thanks for the heads up anyway.
You have a neat shoo too. MB
I wish I could hear him. Buskers like this create a kind of atmosphere around themselves which is hard to explain.
Makin' music! Good choice for 'wood'!
Chuck, I know how you could post before I was finished---because after I wrote about the huge trees I had to post that and then edit again and THEN my sweet computer froze for about one minute before I could upload the rest of the photos and you jumped in. I think!! . See? MB
When the cellist is good, cello music is wonderful! I'm glad he was. A lovely choice for the theme.
Nice posting for the theme. I like the color of Cello.
Happy theme day!
I forgot another theme day. This is a nice picture, Chuck, but wasn't it too cold to play outside?
Last night I watched them make a chello on "How its Made" program and learned the thing that sticks up at the end that holds the strings is not permanently fixed but the strings holds it in place.
Great selection for the post! I used to be a cellist, too! In my much younger days... I miss it sometimes.
The beauty of the wood as well as the form make photos of musical instrument so appealing! I love street/subway musicians and this fella is a brave soul to be playing in what looks like a chilly day.
Wonderful interpretation. I can hear it!
A wonderfully, musical piece of WOOD! Perfect for theme day! I especially like it since I play violin~!
Lovely shot. Glad he was good!
very nice image and no one else has musical instruments and what joy such items bring to the world
Oh, I love the cello! Something about the sound of a cello just resonates in my soul. Funnily enough, I had completely forgotten that it was a theme day-- how fortuitous I happened to pick something that fit! I have since added the link to my post-- thanks for your comment, or I would have remained clueless!
Nice "action" in this street shot!
Unique too.
I didn't dare post another instrument after yesterday's mandolin, yet that would have been my choice. Love this shot, and love the cello. Ah, Bach's cello concertos...
Look at that concentration on the cellist's face. Great composition, Chuck. The contrast of the "stillness" of the musician with the blur of the cyclist is magic.
But begs the question: What in the HELL is next month's theme? I am always caught with my .....well never mind.
Excellent, excellent choice and what a wonderful portrait of this musician. Bravo.

Wow, Chuck! I had glanced at this shot and thought it was a musician at the market. Fun to learn you heard him on the Ave. Also fun to learn you played cello! My husband also was, later switching from strings to woodwinds. I believe the cello is the most beautiful sounding instrument on the planet. . .so much like the human voice in its expressiveness. Last week as I was working around the house I listened to Pablo Casals version of the Cello Suites, then the next day to YoYo Ma's first recording of them, then later his second recording of them, and after that the Emerson Quartet doing some Bach fugues. So, I've been "thinking in cello voice" much of the week :-). Your photo sums it up. Glad you ran into this musician.
So, do you pull out a cello and play anymore? There is certainly an artist's brain below that black chapeau of yours :-).
I like the way you captured “wood!” Chances are that the wood in this beautiful instrument might have come from our neck of the woods. Many of the best cellos, violins and other wood instruments are made from Sitka Spruce. Some say our spruce is as fine a wood for making instruments as the woods that Stradivarius used.
One of my favorite instruments and a sound that I would think is more fitting for Seattle than in other parts of the country. Its certainly not a "LA sound."
(I'm here via a recommendation from Greenwich Village Daily.)
Good one for the theme day. I missed an outdoor winter concert with a cello player just the other day.
"K", celli in LA reminds me of the story about Skid Road cellist Nathaniel Ayers. A very touching story and great cello playing as well. http://tinyurl.com/yd3o9kb
Kim, sounds like you had great inspiration for your house cleaning chores.
No, I've not touched a cello in many years. Wish I still had mine, but that's another story.
Lovely focus. The way the car and bike are blurred in the background really make the cellist stand out - as if the music has absorbed him into a different world, away from the rush and bustle of everyday life.
I was never a stringed instrument player, as my mother couldn't bear to hear us practising, so banned us from ever starting. I played clarinet and piano, though. Clarinet fell by the wayside many years ago, but I still love to sit down in front of my piano and play. It takes away all the cares of the world. Sadly, the piano is in London, not here in Italy, but I'm looking forward to playing again when I go back in the summer. Do you ever still play the cello?
