Teachable moments

Yesterday was a minus 4.14' tide along Seattle's Puget Sound beaches. People flocked to the shore to view things normally hidden from view. Above, this mother pauses to show some interesting sea creature to her young child ... perhaps for the very first time.

Do you remember your very first trip to the beach? What did you see?

Growing up as a landlocked Midwesterner, my "beach trips" were limited to freshwater lakes and rivers. It was not until the age of 34, camping at the Oregon coast, that I finally saw the fruits of a low tide. I had woken early so I decided to take a solo walk down to the beach. Imagine my surprise to find tidepools filled with starfish, anenomes, and other creatures I had only seen behind glass! I went running back to camp to wake my husband, who, as a native Californian, was not quite as shocked as I was at my findings. I spent hours that day examining the shore and try not to miss an especially low tide in Seattle now.

Great post, Chuck. You always seem to be so clever.
I don't remember the first time at a beach. Always grew up around fresh and salt water. I do love the beaches but love the mountains best. MB

So much can be learned, and so many interesting creatures appear at low tide. I do remember.

I think you've heard this story - I saw the Goodyear Blimp!

My mom use to take us to Grayland ocean cabins every spring break. There were so many sand dollars on the beach back in those days. I wonder what happened to them all.

On a trip to Panama in 05, I noticed that their beaches are stuffed with seashells. Brought back memories!

Of course, growing up in Seattle, we always had the beaches close by. But, there's nothing like the ocean for ambiance.
